Happy New Year!
They come, they go, they change, they do not die.
So the Old Year—that fond and formal name,
Is with us yet, another and the same.
And are the thoughts, that ever more are fleeing,
The moments that make up our being's being...
Are these less vital than the wave or wind.
Or snow that melts and leaves no trace behind?
Oh! let them perish all, or pass away,
And let our spirits feel a New Year's day.
They come, they go, they change, they do not die.
~Hartley Coleridge (1796–1849), "New-Year's Day,"
Poems, 1833

Merry Christmas!
http://frommoontomoon.blogspot.com/2016/01/film-set-paddington-bear.html
“I’d like to leave all my interest in, please,” explained Paddington. “In case it rains.” “Well,” said the man in a superior tone of voice as he made some calculations on a piece of paper. “I’m afraid you won’t keep very dry on this. It only comes to ten pence.” “What!” exclaimed Paddington, hardly able to believe his ears. “Ten pence! I don’t think that’s very interesting.” “Interest isn’t the same thing as interesting,” said the man. “Not the same thing at all.” He tried hard to think of some way of explaining matters for he wasn’t used to dealing with bears and he had a feeling that Paddington was going to be one of his more difficult customers. “It’s… it’s something we give you for letting us borrow your money,” he said. “The longer you leave it in the more you get.” “Well, my money’s been in since just after Christmas,” exclaimed Paddington. “That’s nearly six months.” “Ten pence,” said the man firmly.”

Book & Teddybear-Bookmark
Since it's World Kindness Day today, I thought I put together two of the kindest things I know:
"Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers."
- Charles W. Eliot

and ...
"In a world where everyone seems to be larger and louder than yourself, it is very comforting to have a small, quiet companion."
- Peter Gray

"A Dictionary of Color Combinations"
... a small Japanese book which I absolutely love:
A Dictionary of Color Combinations,
by Sanzo Wada,
Seigensha Art Publishing Kyoto, 2011
(foreword in Japanese)
Sanzo Wada (1883 - 1967) was a Japanese costume designer, art teacher and painter. He developed and collected color combinations and created a six-volume-oeuvre in the 1930s.
These volumes are summarized in this edition.
These volumes are summarized in this edition.
This small book is so rich with the loveliest color combinations (348, with an extensive glossary of single color shades at the end of the book): he formed groups of two, three or four colors.
To me his color combinations seem to be like Haiku-poems, weightless, shining, luminous!
The name of his colors alone are pure poetry:
Cerulian Blue, Vistoris Lake, Orange Rufous, Glaucous Green, Pyrite Yellow, Ochraceous Salmon, Eugenia Red ...
I am experimenting with his color-groups and decided to make some bookmarks which show a simple pattern-design in order to give enough room for the colors to shine.
It turns out that I also can use my self-colored fabrics with their delicate shades here perfectly.
I'm so grateful I found that book!
(the book shown here with the bookmark is very lovely:
"Commonwealth", by Ann Patchett, 2016, HarperCollins)

Coffee
- Espresso maker-
"Coffee is a lot more than just a drink; it's something happening.
Not as in hip, but like an event, a place to be,
but not like a location,
but like somewhere within yourself. It gives you time,
but not actual hours or minutes,
but a chance to be, like be yourself,
and have a second cup"
- Gertrude Stein, Selected Writings

It's National Coffee Day today in the US and in Canada,
and there will be the International Coffee Day on October 1.
So: enjoy your coffee, wherever you are in the world!

... and doesn't coffee go very well with books?

Imagine
"If you do just one thing - make one conscious choice - that can change the world, go organic. Buy organic food. Stop using chemicals and start supporting organic farmers. No other single choice you can make to improve the health of your family and the planet will have greater positive repercussions for our future."

Young Tree
A bookmark - made with the help of curcuma, curry, red cabbage, apple, hibiscus, rosehip and stinging nettle - and a shot of vinegar.
I used untreated cotton fabrics (also for the filling) and dyed them with colors provided by nature.
It's a revelation for me and I learn to look at colors differently. In the process, you never know what exactly the outcome might be, the color changes with the texture of the fabric, with tiny changes of the amount of added condiments or leaves or fruit, during the time of soaking, when given to a water-vinegar bath for preservation, while drying and in contact to oxygen or when it's being ironed. I expect the fabric will keep on changing continually, depending on time, exposure to light, the way it will be used ... these fabrics are still living.
I used the motif of a young tree because I am so glad about the news that there are efforts all over the world to plant new saplings, in Ethiopia, India, Philippines, Amazon rainforest, Australia, Ontario..., look here:

I'm reading the absolutely fascinating novel "The Overstory" by Richard Powers, and also opened again the wonderful German picture book by Peter Wohlleben, "Das geheime Leben der Bäume, Was sie fühlen, wie sie kommunizieren." (Ludwig Verlag, München 2016),
which stood on my shelf for a longer time.
One page from this book is shown here.
It is filled with the most stunning and beautiful photographs, descriptions, explanations, narrations and research results.
Both books are about the grandiosity and gloriousness of trees.
So what can I do? Other than give my love to everything which is a part of nature: make bookmarks to mark pages in such great books. So here is one.
